Our team

Our team is led by Rabbi Alon Meltzer and supported by three other Rabbis and many volunteers. Each provides a different perspective and comes with varied backgrounds to encourage the development of a community that engages and respects a variety of opinions.

Rabbi Alon Meltzer

Rabbi Meltzer is a Yeshiva University trained Rabbi, with an MA in Medieval Jewish History, an MA in Sociology, a BA (Hons) in Sociology, and a BA in English and Sociology. He is currently studying a Doctorate at Victoria University.

Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, he has been involved in a number of organisations including Bnei Akiva, AUJS, and on the Board of several community synagogues. He is a Fellow of the Nahum Goldmann Fellowship, and is dedicated to Jewish leadership and community building. 

Formerly the Rabbi of the ACT Jewish Community, Rabbi Meltzer conducts Or Chadash with a lot of energy and excitement. His home is extremely welcoming and he enjoys hosting and engaging the entire community.

Rabbi Meltzer is also the Director of Programs at Shalom.

Advisors and Scholars

Rabbi Selwyn Franklin

Rabbi Franklin, together with his wife Eileen, has led communities in Israel, South Africa, the United States, and Australia. His paramount mission has always been to try and excite Jews of all persuasions to encounter and embrace their old/new heritage.

Eileen and Rabbi Franklin were among
the founders of Counterpoint in South Africa and Australia as well as Jews for Justice, an anti-apartheid group in South Africa.

Rabbi Franklin studied in yeshivot in Israel and received smichah from Rabbi J.B. Soloveitchik z"L, at Yeshiva University in New York. He was also the founding president of ORA, the Organisation of Rabbis of Australasia, and currently serves on the Board of the NSW Kashrut Authority.

Rabbi Franklin and Eileen divide their time between their homes and children in Sydney, Modiin and New York.

Rabbi Danny Eisenberg

Rav Danny was born and educated in Sydney, and received smicha from Yeshivat Etzion.  He and his wife Michelle were amongst the early core members of Or Chadash.

Rav Danny works in IT at UNSW.  He and Michelle have seven children.

Rabbi Dr Ari Lobel

Rabbi Lobel was born and educated in Sydney. He studied at the Hebrew University, Aish Hatorah College of Jewish Studies (where he also taught for a number of years), Ner Israel Rabbinical College and Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.  He has been an editor of the Artscroll English Talmud.

He teaches at the University of Sydney, Kesser Torah College and Moriah College.  He and his wife Lavia have 10 children.
