Guttman Family - Shalom and l'hitraot
After three years in Australia, the Guttman family returned to Israel last week. The Guttmans were an integral part of the community and we will miss them. Before they left they sent a farewell letter to the whole community and asked that it be posted on the website.
Farewell to Or Chadash

Yes, Rosh Hashanah really is quite close. As you may know, we are davening at the Swiss Grand. Please let us know that you are coming, so that we can plan the logistics. We have space for additional friends and family!

Two Jewish leukaemia patients in need of stem cell transfusion are seeking an unrelated tissue type match. Because tissue type [DNA] is inherited, their chances of finding a match are highest within the Jewish community. Even then, that likelihood is 1 in 50 000! All it takes to register as a potential donor is a simple blood test [2 teaspoons of blood and completing a routine medical questionnaire]. See attached flyer for more info.

Posted by Jacquie Seemann Charak on 31 July 2008 Third OC Shavuot dinner and learning
Our Shavuot dinner and learning program at the Charaks' home was a lovely evening. Sorry we can't show you any photos...
Dinner was a sumptuous collation of soup, pizza, pasta, kugel, salads and - of course - cheesecake!
Sima Guttman opened the learning with a fascinating connection of the Department of Education's 'Nine values for Australian school children' with Jewish values. Next, Ze'ev Guttmann ran a 'noughts and crosses' Shavuot quiz with children (and Lucy) as the game pieces. Tommy Sterling gave a fascinating shiur revisiting the famous story of Rabbi Eliezer, the carob tree, the spring, the walls and the statement 'Lo bashamayim hi'. For the late stayers, Jacquie Seemann Charak ran a shiur on learning itself, with thanks to Limmud in the UK for the excellent materials.
We look forward to many more fun learning events...
Thanks to Marion and Jonathan, Jack and Miriam, Mrs Grunfeld and Jacquie for the food, and the Charak children for the decorations.
Posted by Site Administrator on 29 May 2008 Or Chadash entrants complete My Israel Quiz Round 3
13 April: A small but excited group of people gathered at the Charaks' house this evening to complete the oral stage of the Mibereshit My Israel Quiz in honour of the State of Israel's 60th anniversary. We started with a group of 14, of which four made it to this final (for us) stage. Sima Guttman presided over the event, and excited family members joined in to answer extra questions. Everyone learnt a lot. Special thanks to Sima for organising our special team entry, and Angela Zinn for teaching our children. And of course a big yasher koach to all the students who took part, and particularly those who made it to the end.

Torah reading: Re'eh - Free will: limits of a doctrine
Theological writers all explain that the doctrine of free will is enunciated in this week's sidra.
Posted by Rabbi Dr Raymond Apple on 27 Aug 2008 Ask the Rabbi - Genetically modified food
Q. Is genetically modified food halachically acceptable?
Posted by Rabbi Dr Raymond Apple on 27 Aug 2008 Torah reading: Ekev - Fresh daily
The sidra refers, as do many other parts of the Torah, to the Divine commandments "which I command you this day" (Deut. 8:1). Which day is meant?
Posted by Rabbi Dr Raymond Apple on 22 Aug 2008 Ask the Rabbi - Why the Jews?
Q. Why did God give the Torah to the Jews and not some other people?
Posted by Rabbi Dr Raymond Apple on 22 Aug 2008 Torah reading: Va'et'channan (Nachamu) - What made Moses speak?
Early in his career Moses says, "I am not a man of words" (Ex. 4:10).
By the time of the Book of Deuteronomy we read, "These are the words which Moses spoke". Tongue-tied Moses has become a speaker! What caused the change?
